You can set the default branch name for new repositories that you create on GitHub.

When you create a new repository on GitHub, the repository contains one branch, which is the default branch. You can change the name that GitHub uses for the default branch in new repositories you create. For more information about the default branch, see Informationen zu Branches.

Setting the default branch name

  1. Klicken Sie auf einer beliebigen Seite auf GitHub oben rechts auf Ihr Profilfoto und dann auf Einstellungen.
  2. Klicke im Abschnitt „Code, Planung und Automatisierung“ der Seitenleiste auf -Repositorys.
  3. Under "Repository default branch", click Change default branch name now.
  4. In the text field, type the default name that you would like to use for new branches.
  5. Click Update.
